Abstract

A case of bilateral otitis in a peccary in Mossoró, RN, is reported. The subject animal was a 2-year-old male weighing 18.00 kilograms and raised in captivity. Clinical examination revealed auricular scratching, head swinging, excoriations in the ear epithelium, fetid and purulent discharge. Samples of the secretion were colleted with a sterile swab to the determination of the etiologic agent by bacterial culture. Bacterial culture reveals the presence of microorganisms of the genus Bacillus sp. Antibiogram showed resistance to the following antibiotics: gentamicin (10 mg), chloramphenicol (30 mg), novobiocin (30 mg), vancomicin (30 mg). However, it presented sensibility to cefalotin (30 mg). The genus Bacillus must be considered a differential diagnosis for bacterial otitis in peccary and, according to the susceptibility profile reported in this particular case, cefalotin represents an efficient therapeutic option.
