Abstract

The present work aimed to evaluate the efficiency of ricin inactivated by heat for prevention of poisoning by castor bean (Ricinus communis) in rats, as a way to minimize the losses promoted by the toxicosis in animal production. It was performed the thermal treatment of ricin by autoclaving (121oC for 15 minutes), incubation at 70oC for two hours and incubation at 90oC for two hours. The exposure to heat by autoclaving and at 90oC for two hours it were able to completely inactivate ricin. However, ricin inactivated by heat did not produce protection to rats against poisoning by ricin. Furthermore, the addiction of the adjuvant aluminum hydroxide to ricin inactivated by heat also did not produce protection. Keywords: Castor bean, Ricinus communis, ricin, vaccine, poisonous plant
