CECAL IMPACTION WITH RUPTURE IN A HORSE – CASE REPORT

Abstract

The high incidence of colic syndrome is a result of the wide alterations variety that may cause equine acute abdomen, including disturbances of the stomach, spasmodic colic, small and large intestine obstructions with or without vascular strangulation, besides of rectum disturbances. Thus, the present work had the aim to report the clinical and necroscopic findings in a case of impaction with rupture of the cecum in a horse. The information’s are from a 450kg, male, Mangalarga horse, raised intensively. On the third day in the hospital the animal showed signs of colic and died in 12 hours. The necroscopic diagnostic was diffuse peritonitis due to cecal impaction with rupture. We reiterate the importance during the admission of horses in hospital environments the offer of a high quality food with long fibers to stimulate gastrointestinal motility.
