Abstract

The systemic inflammatory response syndrome (SIRS) is characterized by a systemic inflammatory reaction of infectious, metabolic or traumatic origin. Inflammatory chemical mediators such as adhesion molecules, nitric oxide, products of the arachidonic acid metabolism, platelet activator factor (PAF), cytokines and tumor necrosis factor (TNF), can produce metabolic and cellular alterations, unchaining the loss of the regulatory capacity of organic homeostasis. Recognizing, diagnosing and instituting an early therapeutic is a challenge to the veterinary doctor, with extreme importance to the patient involved, lowering, in these cases, the chances of clinical evolution to dysfunction or multiple organ failure (MODS). Keywords: Inflammation, dysfunction, shock.
