Abstract

Urolithiasis represents one of the most important reasons of complaint in dogs and cats with urinary disorders. In cats about 13% of these affections are caused by calculus. In dogs this percentage increases up for 18%. The formation of crystals and calculus is caused by reduction on the urinary frequency associated to the supersaturation of the urine, and it could be related to dietary factors. Among the substantial existing uroliths, the most founded are struvite and calcium oxalate. The nutrition could be related to the formation, prevention and treatment of urolithiasis. Thus, this review aims to present informations that prove the interference of nutrition in dogs and cats with urolithiasis. Keywords: Urolithiasis, urolith, struvite, nutrition, calcium oxalate.
